I am proud to have worked in the primary manufacturing industry at G&P Welding and Ironworks for almost a decade.

I am also grateful for this work as it allowed us to raise a young family and have a beautifully rich quality of life on the Canadian Shield.
My time at G&P resulted in Red Seal Metal Fabricator certification. Sharing this skill set with students led to empowerment through functional projects like modifying sea cans and repairing playgrounds.
After almost a decade in the steel industry, I challenged the Metal Fabricator exam; it was the most applicable test I have ever written; it was clear that the authors had a profound knowledge of the required knowledge and skills.
This has become a reminder that assessment must be relevant and authentic. Also meaningful is the etymology of assessment, based on the Latin assidere ‘to sit by’ (OED); thus, we are invited to have evaluation be infused with collaboration.
Oddly, I was trained as a welder, but it became apparent that I was a better fitter. Some things we just need to roll with.
